video player on etry page instead of links list

I tested now having a video player (youtube format with 8 vids on the side + big window + links on the left)

Average time on the page at 40 seconds has doubled but still shows that people don't stay and watch all the vids on average. They in fact don't even complete one video.

In comparison, the video pages on dating success for women score an average of around 2 minutes (I think - not sure the exact value)

Other results:
  • bounce: without player: around 30% - with player: around 50%
  • average time on page: without player: around 30sec - with player: around 40sec
  • %exit : without player: around 35% - with player: around 45%

These numbers show that even though the player is taking all the place and attention, it does not perform well.

I think that the key reason is that it gives the visitor a lower sense of control over what he wants to watch.

There is simply no choice + It is not clear what is on the video (no title on that player) + The titles on the small video windows on the site are cut which makes difficult to see what they are about.

In other terms, the player does rob the visitor from a sens of control and ownership over what they watch.

Conclusion?

The performance of a clear set of links is much higher than having a forced video player overpowering the page's space.

Player against list of links? list of links wins!!!

This shows something very clear:

Youtube subscribing trends - Oct 2008 to Mar 2009

  • Oct - 169 subs - 5.6/day
  • Nov - 164 - 5.5/day
  • dec - 137 - 4.5/day
  • jan - 145 - 4.8/day
  • feb - 159 - 5.3/day
  • mar - 164 - 5.5/day

from oct 2008 to mid january, no new vides were posted and still the number of subscribers kept going up.

Jan to mar - a few videos posted/week still the number fo new subscribers stayed steady.

But, with new vids, unsubscriptions happen, which means that new vids brings a proportional descrease subscriber when you compare with not posting.

On the other hand hand, not posting means as well that less vids and no new material will be seen so of course, it is posting new vids that is important.

"Passive" subscribers that watch nothing from you for months mean a potential which is not used.

Now, the real big realization is that the number of new subscriptions stays the same weather you post of not.

The number of subscriptions is rather linked with the number of video views overall rather than the number of new vids.

Logical, of course!

adwords - sales projections

over the last few years, the campaigns which are now active were converting at aroun 1% average. break up was going even higher reaching clsoe to 2% for some periods.
  • At 50 euros/month spending and 10 cents CPC that's 500 clicks/month or 5 sales
  • at 200 euros/month that's 2000 clicks or 20 sales

These are simple projections which can reflect and maybe more investment could lead to more sales.

At 200/month (in euros) and 20 sales with price/product at around 12 euros (after deduction of various fees) hardly any profit is left.

It's around 100% ROI with no profit.

Best way to test? try increasing or dropping adwords spending.

+ Find out where this direct traffic comes from and invest in that!

Adwords conversions - for january to march 2009

the conversions coming from adwords and yahoo ads have now dropped to 0% to 3% of total sales

It's possible that there are more sales coming from these sources and that the conversion tracking simply does not work properly

This is very little though!

These results are very poor compared to what it used to be.

for the breakupformen page, traffic coming from advertising (both google and yahoo) represents around 20 to 30 visits/day

That's a vague estimation.

in january 2009, campaigns were almost totally paused as conversions did not show up - Total ebook sales for that month 52

february 2009 reactivated the campaigns with for instance 2.5 euros/day on adwords - total sales 72

march 2009 still running with same budget on campaigns but again, sales at around 55 in 29 days.

For a couple of months, I made many manual checks of referring URL's when a sale was coming through.

For Feb, out of 23 sales manually checked, not a single was coming from adwords or yahoo.

here are the results:
  • organic - main page - 2 sales
  • organic seo pages - 5 sales
  • direct traffic to main page - 14 sales
  • youtube - 2 sales

These are for all products and represent only a fraction of the sales, only the ones I actually took time to check.

For march 2009, the same type of trend can be seen so far.

Now, the 14 sales coming from direct traffic could be bookmarked URL's or people entering either the website or the direct URL.

This traffic could coming from all sorts of sources including:

  • Referrals
  • Youtube
  • Bookmarked URL
  • Adwords and Yahoo PPC traffic not recorded by the conversion system ???
  • Other???

This last question is essential!!!

because that's where a huge part of sales come from but the source of those sales is not known for sure.

this is a the key question: where does that direct traffic come from originally?

What is the true original source?

How did these people find me in the first place?

Where do these conversions come from?

It's essential to find out because right now, that's what is working best! with around 50% of conversions

Adwords update - shifted the targeting to google only - no more search partners

... As some of these partners were actually getting more than 90% of the clicks for some of the campaigns.

This feels like almost forces clicks from some of these partners which makes the clicks very poor quality.

"subscribe" conversion rate in blogs

that's the question I will try to answer now.

Most blogs have a signup form (just email) at the very top before the posts

This type of form appear on thousands of blog posts now.

At this stage, most of the autoresponders connected with these forms get only a few sign ups /month

the main ones are
  • spiritual power - 7000 page views (2 years period) - getresponse subsc 155 - 6 subscibers/month - conversion rate 2%
  • tantric sex - 8000 page views - subs 70 - 3 /month - conversion rate 1%
  • babaji - 6000 page views - subs 150 - 6/month - conversion rate 3%
  • dating for women - 15000 pages - subs 60 (1 year period) - 5/month - conversion rate 1%
  • Etc

conversion rates are overall 1-3% for this type of set up

Leave it as it is or shift to something else?

March 27 - 10 days after the new site maps creation

Overall, there is a slight decrease in traffic (all sites considered) - Maybe around 5%

Especially noted

I think this happened before when new site mapes where sublitted - There is first decrease than increase

-------------------

breakupformen - no change

femalejealousy - no change

etc

it's either that 10 days is too short or that the site map does not impact the traffic

Because of all the hundreds of blog posts on these sites, if there is an impact, it will come later

New site maps!!! - March 16 2009 - Check for traffic stats!

Posted a whole list of site maps to vitalcoaching.com + site maps.

Check for traffic stats and changes in the coming weeks (or even months)

in the past, it looked like no site map submission for a few months could lead to decrease in traffic of around 20% or more.

Check what happens with these new submissions....

Video player or one video + links?

Right now, I have two different design directions or options I am testing.

  • the frist one is to stick to what i did before: list of links on the pages + a few videos on the side bar + list of e-books on the side bar, etc.
  • The second design is a big video player in the center with some navigation and links on the left side bar.

Which one to adopt long term?

what works best with visitors?

I first design is already present in so many pages and i know it works because I see the bounces + Times on the page. People stay and come back to a certain extent. I described in detail the traffic stats for these pages in another post

The second design is being testet on a couple of pages:

  • Mind - not enough traffic to see clear stats
  • Sanskrit - lots of traffic on that one - could check straight time on page, etc after a couple days testing

So far, nothing significant can be seen

Both directions are open...

Links to my social networking profiles in the dating for women navigation - First results

After a few days of this activity, the results are as expected in terms of new connections...

Close to no signups - It's possible that Youtube might have pulled some but it is hard to track where the new subscriptions come from as there is a bout 5/day coming in any way right now.

Yes! There could be a positive perception of my connection which increases my credibility and shows that I am actually connected

In other terms these are more brand awareness results which are tricky to track.

In terms of real results, within 5 days, no new connection in either Hi5, linkedin, my space, skype, etc.

facebook, maybe one in 5 days???

itunes and youtube? impossible to track as sources can be various...

added social networking links to all dating for women pages - TEST

As a big fraction of my free content is dating for women, I added links to the 8 major social networking connection people can connect me with.

I will wait for a few days and check how many new "friebd" requests or youtube new subscriptions I get.

These pages might be visited anywhere between 200 and 1000 times/day

If the conversion rate is average, I could get 1-5 new friends or subscriptions requests.

If the conversion rate is pretty high, it could be higher...

Is it worth maintaining these links on those pages?

It's traffic out of the site + loads the naviagtion but could increase my networking power online...

Test! To be followed.

With less than 5 signups or friend requests/day, it might be too invading to keep on site...

Yes? No? to be checked further....

------------------------

Only one indication of possible conversion rates comes from youtube.

For 2000 video views, 5 subscriptions. that 0.25% subscription conversion rate/video view

video content - how to present it?

4 options
  • List of links to specific videos
  • a few videos on the page - play on the spot
  • player
  • video wall
  • mix between all of these

Right now, the option taken is usually list of links to specific videos used in:

  • wake up your power
  • dating for women
  • etc

Or... Mix between videos on page + links

  • dating for women SEO pages
  • etc

a few videos on the page? that option has a vid limit of 4-6... more than that? the potential for jaming up the upload of the page is too high with synchronized upload of a few players at the same time... Not recommended

not experimentd yet with either players or walls.

Players are an attractive option.

How well do they perform compared with a clear video list?

Do visitors come back more to the page?

Conclusion: player? turn on or turn off???

gateway pages - results

these pages are linked to the navigation - they do perform alright but they simply get very little traffic

E-books (one main page)

  • time on page 0:31
  • bounce 20%
  • exit 9%
  • 50% repeated page views

Videos

  • time on page 0:39
  • bounce 67% (of course, no navigation on top unlike the e-books page)
  • exit 13% (people don't live the site, they simply go back)

Audios

  • time on page 0:25
  • bounce 100%
  • exit 5%

The main gate way pages like

  • relationships
  • business
  • body
  • etc

get an ok. little bounce + little exit + average 0:30 on page

the challenge with those is the very small amount of visits.

They simply get very little traffic - maybe 50% returning visits

Satellite sites results

Satellite sites have a VERY poor track record in terms of time on page, bouncing, etc.

All these sites have an average time on page of a few seconds where as the SEO pages on vitalcoaching.com which are EXACTLY the same content score really well!

Some ideas:

Break up for men - SEO pages - extra 4

  • time on page 3:20
  • bounce 93%
  • exit 91%
  • 3% repeated page views

Time on page is excellent! compared with the other satellite sites where time on page average is often only a few seconds!

Why is there such a big difference?

The pages are EXACTLY the same except that the domain name is different, not vitalcoaching.com

Does this kill the credibilty instantly?

Does it mean removing logo and branding on satellite sites and designing a whole new type of pages? Content oriented rather than sales oriented?

Anything else can explain these results? There is ABSOLUTELY nothing else different between the extra4 SEO pages and the satellite site pages and still the difference between the two is like black and white!!!

Huge difference of perception and credibility!

Pages that work! - Why?

Dating for women - SEO pages - extra2

  • time on page 0:55 sec
  • bounce 47%
  • exit 49%
  • 37% repeated page view

These pages perform well - there is follow through

Yes, maybe the results can still be improved

---------------------

Huge difference of perception and credibility!

---------------------

Cheating for men - sales page - This page is basically just one sales video

  • Time on page 1:42
  • bounce 92%
  • exit 64%
  • 10% repeated page views

This page performs ok as well...

---------------------

dating for men - main sales page

  • Time on page 3:51
  • bounce 88%
  • exit 71%
  • 13% repeated page views

This one performs along the same line as break ups and cheating

---------------------

Jealousy for men - main sales page

  • Time 3:19
  • bounce 79%
  • exit 56%
  • 13% repeated page views

---------------------

Wake up your power - area pages

  • Time 1:41
  • bounce 60%
  • exit 20%
  • 41% repeated page views

this one scores very close to the dating for women SEO pages! - Logical! they have the same structure with free content links to videos + audios and lots of interesting content

Good performance!

---------------------

Wake up your power - video pages

  • Time 4:40
  • bounce 42%
  • exit 25%
  • repeat 17% - normal - these are single video pages

The big one here is 4:40 on the page!

This is excellent! considering that the average video is 5 min - this means that actually people stay on the page to watch the whole video!

It means that these pages REALLY work and do what they are supposed to!

---------------------

Dating success - For women - area

  • time 1:16
  • bounce 35%
  • exit 12%
  • repeat 42%

same results as wake up your power area - again free content with rich video + audio content

---------------------

Dating success - For women - videos

  • time 3:18
  • bounce 55%
  • exit 20%
  • repeat 12%

Again, VERY similar to wake up your power videos

---------------------

Break up for men - area

  • time 2:03
  • bounce 46%
  • exit 23%
  • repeat 66%

Of course the repeat is higher because visitors did pay to access that product and it's extra targeted, so they come back to check it again

Tiem slightly longer because the page used to be complex, so they come to check it again frequently

---------------------

Blog - break up - for men

  • time 1:16
  • bounce 69%
  • exit 23%
  • repeat 13%

This one works ok as well - 1:16 time on page is not too bad and exit rates are pretty low - it means that those who access the page want to keep on checking the site further

---------------------

E-books (one main page)

  • time on page 0:31
  • bounce 20%
  • exit 9%
  • 50% repeated page views

Videos

  • time on page 0:39
  • bounce 67% (of course, no navigation on top unlike the e-books page)
  • exit 13% (people don't live the site, they simply go back)

Audios

  • time on page 0:25
  • bounce 100%
  • exit 5%

The main gate way pages like

  • relationships
  • business
  • body
  • etc

get an ok. little bounce + little exit + average 0:30 on page

the challenge with those is the very small amount of visits.

They simply get very little traffic - maybe 50% returning visits

Even though these

------------------------------------------

Conclusions

  • driving traffic to gateway pages is challenging

even though these pages are linked from major navigation areas, they are not what people access first or look for on the site!

  • Main product pages perform well

Of course it can still be imrpoved but they do work really well - in other terms, it is much better to drive traffic to targeted pages like tehse ones rather than general "e-book" or "dating" pages.

yes, they need to be there as gateways but both from a SEO perspective + traffic building within the site, they are challenging to make succeed.

people don't care about the format as long as this format works! The price of course must be within the range of what they have in mind...

what really matters is that they recognize in the link a solution to the challeng they face...

Again, be very specific! and direct visitors to pages that give them what they look for --> a targeted solution to a challenge they face.

--------------------------
